A Kansas City man has been charged with murder in the deaths of Ashley Thomas and her unborn baby girl.
Thomas, who grew up in Independence and graduated from Truman High School in 2003, was shot Friday outside her apartment building in midtown Kansas City as she sat in a car with her 19-year-old boyfriend, Darryl Pickens. Pickens also was shot, suffering critical injuries, according to the Jackson County Prosecutors Office.
Lionel R. Henderson, 25, faces two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault, along with three counts of armed criminal action, according to court documents.
Kansas City police reported that the shooting happened about 5:18 p.m. Friday at 1301 E. Armour in Kansas City. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where Thomas and her unborn child were pronounced dead. She was nine months pregnant.
A fourth victim came forward Saturday, KC police said, and reported that Pickens pulled up in front of the apartment complex on Armour, with Thomas in the passenger seat. The fourth victim got into the back passenger-side seat and about a minute later, the victim told police, two black males passed by, walking east. One of them pulled out a gun and started firing into the vehicle while the other acted as a lookout. The fourth victim ducked, but was grazed in the neck. That victim identified the two suspects from a lineup, indicating Henderson was the person who acted as lookout.
Henderson was arrested Saturday.
