A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ (The Gathering Place), 2820 Missouri 291 Frontage Road, Independence, Mo.

Georgia was born July 4, 1921, in Peggs County, Okla., to Lucy and William Forbes, growing up near Avant. In 1939, she married Othel W. Smith, her husband of 64 years, moved to Skiatook, Okla., and raised two children, Linda and Wayne. Skiatook was O.W. and Georgia’s home until they moved to Independence in 1998 to live near their grown children.

Georgia was a gifted homemaker. As a member of the Skiatook Garden Club, she spent many hours in her gardens, grew exceptional roses and won top prizes in local flower shows. Her beautiful flower arrangements often adorned the church altar on Sunday mornings. Georgia was an equally fine cook, especially baked goods. Her notable “Fudge Nut Cake” and “Fourteen Carat Cake” won Sweepstakes and Blue Ribbon prizes.

The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints, and later the Remnant Church, played a vital role in her life, where she served as women’s leader and was active in the children’s Sunday School Department. Georgia was also a member of the Skiatook Chapter of the P.E.O.

Georgia was a sensitive caregiver and spent many years in the service of helping others manage their health and daily life concerns. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and six siblings.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Kay and Donald Burnett, son, O. Wayne Smith Jr., granddaughter, Jennifer Hobbs, and great-grandson, Cooper Hobbs, all of Independence.

Interment is at Osage Gardens Cemetery, Skiatook, Okla. Memorial contributions may be made to The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ building fund, 700 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64050 or Powell Gardens, 1609 N.W. U.S. 50, Kingsville, MO 64061.
