Gerald Duane “Scarecrow” Ward, 56, of Independence, Mo., passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Gerald Duane “Scarecrow” Ward, 56, of Independence, Mo., passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at the Kansas City Hospice House.

He was born July 15, 1956, in Boone County, Mo., to Samuel and Beverly (Davis) Ward. He was reared by his father and step-mother, Sophie Ward, in Independence, where he graduated from Truman High School. Scarecrow’s passion was farming and wrenching. He worked for Vogt Farms in Independence for the majority of his working years and was also an accomplished mechanic.

Survivors include his fiancée, Pam Evans of the home; two sons, Brandon and Ryan Evans, both of Independence, Mo.; six siblings, Samuel Ward Jr., Terry Ward, Sophie Sawyer, Barbara Crane, Patty Davis and Carolyn Saling; and four grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Scarecrow’s life from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Meyers Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs, where a Sharing of Memories will be held at 2:30 p.m.
