  • Nagging injuries and illness finally caught up with Missouri Mavericks forward Jeff Pierce, who has been traded to Arizona in exchange for future considerations.
The Mavericks will receive a player at the end of the season to complete the trade.
“It’s a numbers game,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said following Thursday morning’s practice session at the Independence Events Center. “Pierce started the season so well (being named the CHL’s Player of the Week for Week 1), but he had the injuries and then the flu. We need healthy bodies, and we wish him well.”
Mavericks president and general manager Brent Thiessen echoed the coach’s comments.
“As players are getting healthy, we knew that roster moves would need to be made and we are now in a situation where we have too many forwards,” Thiessen said. “Jeff is a great hockey player, but unfortunately we had to make a move, and we feel it is the right move for the Mavericks at this time.”
Pierce scored 19 points in 21 games this season. He had seven goals and 12 assists.
The Mavericks play host to Wichita at 7:05 p.m. tonight with the first 1,000 fans age 15 and younger receiving a Mavericks youth jersey. The Denver Cutthroats will make their first appearance at the IEC at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
THINEL NAMED CHL PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Sebastien Thinel, the CHL scoring leader with 50 points and last week’s CHL Player of the Week with nine points, was named the CHL Player of the Month on Thursday.
He led all players with 29 points with nine goals and 20 assists. He also finished with a plus-9 rating (to go along with his plus-16 rating for the season). He had eight multiple point games in December and five games with three or more points.
Thinel won the CHL scoring title in 2009 and 2011. He was also named First Star in the Oakley Three Stars for December on Wednesday.
