  • A passenger in a vehicle that led Lake Tapawingo police on a chase on U.S. 40 Sunday night died when the vehicle crashed, according to Blue Springs police.

  • A passenger in a vehicle that led Lake Tapawingo police on a chase on U.S. 40 Sunday night died when the vehicle crashed, according to Blue Springs police.
    The chase began about 10:05 p.m. Sunday when Lake Tapawingo police attempted to stop a 2000 Mercury Sable for careless driving. The officer pursued the vehicle eastbound on U.S. 40.
    The driver of the Sable was a 29-year-old Blue Springs man.
    The chase entered Blue Springs, and near U.S. 40 and Southwest 19th Street the driver lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the right side of the road and hit a utility pole.
    The driver fled on foot, but was caught a short time later by officers.
    The passenger was a 29-year-old man.He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe he is from Overland Park, Kan., based on his driver's license information. His family has not yet been contacted.
    The driver is in Blue Springs Police custody pending criminal charges.
