The city of Independence has closed 39th Street between Lynn and Main streets to allow for storm sewer construction. The closure, west of Noland Road, will be in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The storm sewer project is part of a major $2.6 million construction project that will improve 39th Street from Noland Road to Crysler Avenue.

At least two more street closings will be necessary prior to the project’s completion in fall 2011, said John Powell, city director of public works, in a news release. The new 39th Street will be a three-lane roadway with a center turn lane and new curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches and a storm drainage system.
