The day before the Independence City Council election, candidate Chris Whiting's campaign came under criticism over a mailer that showed up in the final days before Tuesday’s election.
The mailer claims Whiting has been endorsed by, among others, State Rep. Noel Torpey and City Council Member Curt Dougherty.
Torpey says he absolutely did not endorse Whiting.
“Nothing further from the truth,” he says. Asked directly if he endorsed Whiting, “I did not.”
Whiting’s opponent Patrick Cierpiot reported campaign contributions from the “Citizens for Torpey” and “Citizens to Elect Dougherty” committees.
Whiting said the mailing went out from a third-party group not directly affiliated with his campaign. he said he had not seen the piece and did not give the group permission to put his name on it.
“There are lots of people who are supporting me, and I guess someone took it upon themselves to do this,” Whiting said. “I had nothing to do with the content or the sending out of the piece.”
The flier was paid for by the Show-Me Council for Accountability and Responsibility in Government, with no individual’s name listed.
