  • Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ calls upon his saints to love one another, to act in humility, and to always count others more significant than one’s self (1 John 4/Philippians 2:3-5).
James William Bedsworth, 65, of Buckner, Mo., exemplified these qualities as a son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, worker, employer, friend and member of The Lord’s Church.
Jim passed away at his home Nov. 6, 2012 from a heart attack. He is survived by his wife Sherry of 45 years.
He was born Feb. 24, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo., to parents Lawrence Lee and Mary Kathryn (Corum) Bedsworth. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1965. He married Sherry Diane Jones in 1967 on April 14 at Jim’s parents’ house in Sugar Creek. They stayed in the Independence area before ultimately settling in Buckner in 1980.
Jim had an unmistakable smile and contagious, uplifting personality. He enjoyed traveling, outdoors, sports, and spending time with his many loved ones. He was an active member of the Southside Church of Christ, where he once served as an elder and was a constant, wonderful example to all. He was the epitome of the Good Samaritan, generously charitable, giving his time and his heart to anyone.
In business, Jim and one other employee started his first company, Terminal Consolidation Company in 1976, where his former employer, the Western Auto Company, became his first customer.
He opened Kansas City Piggyback and several other companies that complemented the first and provided employment for many people. Jim’s honesty, integrity and down to earth approach to business led to success for himself, his partners and his employees. Western Auto remained one of his core customers during his entire association with each company.
Jim had a great partnership and friendship with Rick Rew for more than 20 years, building deep relationships and a very successful business in KCG.
Jim is survived by his wife Sherry; mother Kathryn; siblings: Tom along his wife Anita, and Mary along with her husband Wayne; three children: James William Bedsworth Jr. and his wife Sheri; Richard Wayne Bedsworth and his wife Mary; Kristi Leigh (Bedsworth) McBee and her husband Steve; grandchildren are: Toree and her husband Luke Westbrook, Jade and her husband JT Carlson, Beth and her fiancé Zach Wharton, Laney, Steven, Jesse, Zoe, Cole and Brayden; great-grandchild: Easton. Jim is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, their spouses, and 17 great-nieces and nephews who he was very close to.
Services will be held at noon on Monday, November 12, 2012, at Eastside Baptist Church 1901 East 78 Highway in Independence, MO, 64057. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be a private grave site service.
