  • The Independence Chamber of Commerce on Friday plans to hold an event to honor police, firefighters and EMTS.
The First Responders Recognition and Awards Breakfast is at 7:30 a.m. at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave. It’s intended to be an annual event. The Examiner is sponsoring it.
The awards are meant as an expression of the business communty’s thanks for efforts above and beyond the call of duty that keep the community safe.
The chamber has taken nominations of firefighters, police officers, EMTs and other first responders in Independence in four award categories:
    • Heroism, which the chamber says is about “evidencing a quality and/or attribute of unselfish courage as shown by a specific noble act.”
    • Community Service – “being involved in activities and organizations on his/her own time that benefit the common good within the community in he/she lives.”
    • Bravery – “displaying unusual courage and valor through multiple specific instances.”
    • Dedication – “commitment to the persons assisted by the first responder after the event that brought them together.”
For more information, call the chamber at 816-252-4745.
