Teachers in the Independence School District have received grants from GEHA.

Spring Branch Elementary – Janelle Ewigman, Nicole Bunch and Christine Ellis. “Clicking Our Way to Success” will be implemented during the 2010-11 school year. With the $1,000 grant, they will be able to purchase a set of Le Smar Response Clickers to stimulate student engagement and provide efficient student feedback while promoting “earth-friendly” teaching practices. Van Horn High School – Cristin Nowak, Matt Habernehl and Juilie Hamby. The Algebra I Department at Van Horn will use the $1,000 toward the Smart Response System for students. With the Smart Response System, each student will receive a wireless clicker. These clickers can answer selected response or constructed response items when students type in their answers. The Algebra I Department will enter checkpoints, quizzes, bell ringer questions and many other types of questions in the Smart Response System. The system will provide immediate feedback to the class a whole, the individual student or just the teacher. The Smart Response System will also allow students to answer anonymously, if the teacher so chooses. Randall – Andrea Pittman. Randall Elementary has created The Randall Family Store in order to provide families with hygiene items, food, children’s clothing and shoes, cleaning supplies, school supplies, household goods (dishes, towels, silverware, cups/glasses, etc.) and other miscellaneous items (children’s toys, books, Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday assistance, etc.). Parents can volunteer at Randall and earn Bear Bucks which can be spent in the store. For every hour a parent volunteers, they can earn $5 worth of Bear Bucks. During the 2009-10, Randall had more parents volunteering than ever before, and the 12 families who applied for Christmas assistance all volunteered 20 hours at the school. The $1,000 will help purchase items for the store in order to keep the program going.
