Team-by-team look at the American Legion Fifth District

BLUE SPRINGS POST 499/FIKE
Top returnees: Sam Engle, Blaine Hines, Kirk Huismann, Lucas Jensen, Daniel Segalo, Michael Stroup, Ross Taylor, David Williams.
Newcomers: Kellen Bartlett, Justin Braun, Daniel McMurtrey, Stephen Montisano, Logan Moon, Robbie Payton, Alex White.
Coaching staff: Jim Moran, manager; Matt Hagerty, Travis Reeder, Randy Keele, John Meyer, coaches.
Manager’s comments: “We lost three pitchers that accounted for half of our wins last year. That is always hard to replace. We do bring back Huismann, Hines, Jensen and Keele, who all did a good job. And by adding Bartlett, even though we won’t have him the entire year, Peyton, Brown and Perrine we hope to be able to survive the tough Fifth District. Coaches always say, ‘If our pitching holds up’ and this year will be no exception. Our defense should be solid with returnees as six positions, but how we come together will be the key. Engle and Segalo will anchor the outfield with Moon, Jensesn, Perrine rotating out there. The infield will have Bartlett, Taylor, Montisano, McMurtrey, Keele and Williams all sharing time while Stroup and White will share the catching chores.”
2007 finish: 38-18 overall, tie for second place second in Fifth District at 23-13.
2008 outlook: With nine returnees returning from a solid  team, another winning season is likely. Pitching could be the key to how successful of a season it will be.

Manager’s comments: “We have a lot of experience returning, so that should help. But our pitchers and hitters will need to step up. Defensively, we need to solidify our middle infield.”
2007 finish: 29-32 overall, fifth place in Fifth District at 17-19.
2008 outlook: What with 11 returnees, manager Gary Stone has one of his most experienced teams. Thus, Post 340 could rebound from a rare losing season. Pitching will be a key. A stopper on the pitching staff would be a big plus.

Newcomers: Paul Baker, Kyle Clifton, Corey Findley, Jamie Hayes, Jake Kissner, Will Shermon,Travis Sitzman, Jordan Sloan.
Coaching staff: Tom Bush, manager; Sheldon Chambers, Mike Kline, Jason Pleacher, Byron White, coaches.
Manager’s comments: “I think we have a good mix of first year and returning players. If we have any strong points it would be six of our returners were starters last year. With pitchers Sitzman, Booth, Ray, Ruhlman, Dunn, Clifton, Hayes, Kissner and Findley, we should have decent pitching depth. However, they must throw strikes to keep their pitch count down. Another key to the success of our season will be how well our reserves play. With the grind of our schedule, they should have plenty of opportunities to contribute. If we get some complete games from our starting pitchers, our reserves play well and keep everyone healthy, we should have a competitive season.”
2007 finish: 36-22 overall, tie for second place in Fifth District at 23-13.
2008 outlook: A deep and strong pitching staff should lead Post 21 to another winning season. The team, however, appears to lack power. Thus, hitting could be a key along with the play of the defense.
