Owners of and employees at the Fike Corporation in Blue Springs, one of the oldest and largest employers in the city, can now beef up their already reputable global reputation.

When your company is a supplier of products and services that protect people and assets from fire, explosion and over-pressurization, it’s probably a good idea to be safe on and near the work floor.

Owners of and employees at the Fike Corporation in Blue Springs, one of the oldest and largest employers in the city, can now beef up their already reputable global reputation.

As of Thursday, the company achieved the significant milestone of logging one million hours without a lost work day injury at the Blue Springs facility.

“It’s a goal that we’ve been working for,” Chairman Lester Fike said following a ceremony at the company on 10th Street.

Many companies throughout the world can claim such an achievement, but in many instances the company employs a large workforce. Fike in Blue Springs employs 350.

The one million hours without an injury time span was from December 2008 until Thursday.

In that time, not a fall, not a scrape, not a bump, nothing.  The news was good enough that most – if not all – employees gathered in the parking lot Thursday and gave themselves a round of applause.

“By achieving this milestone, it puts us in an elite class of manufacturers in the world,” Fike said.

Dave Mosby, senior loss control consultant for Lockton Companies, praised the company. Serving Fike for the last 15 years, Mosby said that not many companies reach such a goal.

Also in attendance was Dave Begemann, a Risk Control Consultant for Travelers Insurance, and Blue Springs Mayor Carson Ross, who congratulated the company.

“Fike is an important employer of our community and this achievement is something every Fike employee should be proud of,” he said.

Ross offered a proclamation from himself and City Council that read, in part, that the city “applaud the history, goals, and accomplishments associated with Fike Corporation.”

Chuck Kopoulos, President and CEO of Fike, said that Fike, being what it is and being known throughout the world, should emphasize safety in the workplace.

“As a company that manufactures life and business safety products, it’s part of our overall culture to emphasize safety in the workplace,” he said. “Everyone here should be proud of this accomplishment.”

Fike Corporation was started in 1945. The Blue Springs facility has been in the city since 1958.
