Though much of what James Everett wrote in his Jan. 15 editorial is subject to challenge, I choose but one of his ideas, and that is Americans and Christians are to be criticized for their long support of slavery. He says he agrees with Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s longtime pastor.

I am an octogenarian who grew up in Arizona, graduated from a church related Texas university, and after marriage made my home in New York, England, Virginia, Alabama, Colorado, Arizona, and now Missouri.

Though I was associated with a church in each location, I never met a self identified Christian that was pro-slavery. I cannot help but wonder where Mr. Everett has met American pro-slavery Christians. He must surely be living a long, long way back in the past and in a limited geographical area.
