The American Legion Fifth District opening doubleheader resulted in a split for Hi-Boy Drive In/Post 340.
Parker Jones slammed a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Post 340 a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Lee’s Summit Post 189 Pirates in the first game Thursday night at Santa Fe Trail Park.
The Pirates rebounded for an easy 11-1 victory.
“We need to keep working,” Post 340 manager Gary Stone said after his team moved to 1-2 overall. “We had a lot of kids who didn’t throw a lot of innings in school ball and they are trying to get their arms in shape.
“The defense was a little shaky, but it’s a long season. Langkamp and Gordon did fine in the first game.”
Christian Velez had a pinch-hit single and James Lamison was safe on an error, setting the stage for Parker’s two-out blast.
Vince Langkamp pitched the opening six innings. Chad Gordon pitched the seventh for the win.
Kevin Wright struck out 10 and scattered six hits in suffering a tough loss.
Kevin Haug and Brad Aubin each singled twice for the Pirates (4-1, 1-1 district).
Jacob Parker allowed only four hits and Haug and Jared Eiskina each singled twice to lead the Pirates for the second-game victory. Luke Wiss was the losing pitcher.
