Welcome Kohl’s.

Well, nearly.

The much-loved department store pushed through its first obstacle Monday night during the Blue Springs Planning Commission meeting. While the commission was three members short, eight members passed its site plan and design review.

The approximately 118,000 square-foot store will be smaller than the majority of its stores, but a spokesperson said the same items will be offered – just in limited quantity.

In addition, the new store, to be located at the city’s ambitious Adams Dairy Landing retail project, will blend in nicely with the development’s Mediterranean style architecture.

Commission Member Ken Billups Jr. thanked architects and planners for the department store, who went back to the drawing board the past two weeks to redesign certain elements, including some color schemes and one entrance point.

“The city thanks you for your effort,” Billups said.

Kohl’s already has one store a few miles to the west, on 39th Street in eastern Independence.
