  • The WEE Bus is getting some help from a group at the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber’s 2012-13 L.E.A.D. class – leadership, education, action, development – graduated Thursday, and its project was a fundraiser for the bus. The group raised $5,043 in a bowling event at Lunar Bowl.
“It really emphasizes what the community can do,” class member Wendell Fuimaono, assistant principal at Blue Springs High School, said at the chamber’s monthly luncheon.
WEE stands for Women Endowing Education, a reference to the main donors who have supported the bus.
The Blue Springs School District Foundation supports the bus, which goes around the community and offers Internet access to students who might otherwise lack it. It’s also taken students to an event at Union Station, and a trip to the zoo is planned.
“It’s all about learning. It’s all about students,” said Katherine Barton, the foundation’s executive director.
The L.E.A.D. program is a September-to-June effort with a dozen or more people networking, visiting businesses and other organizations in town, and studying community issues.
“You find out ways to give back to the community,” said class member Andrea Toney of the Blue Springs Family YMCA.
The group visited social service groups such as Hillcrest Ministries, the Salvation Army and the Community Services League. The Central Jackson County Fire Protection District demonstrated how quickly a fire can burst out of control. There was team building at Paradise Park. There was a trip to Jefferson City.
“If you look around (this room), these are the people who are active in the community,” said chamber board Chairman Bill Fickle.
The chamber is taking applications for the 2013-14 class. In addition to Fuimaono and Toney, the 2012-13 class members are Kim Brosam, Shelley Brown, Dale Geer, Joe Fanara, Rene Keil, Kelly Logan, Mike Peterman, Denise Phillips, Keri Reinbold, Chad Smith, Diane Stockard and Karen Van Winkle.
