Chiefs sign former Jets back

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Tuesday veteran free agent running back Thomas Jones.

The 5-foot-10, 212-pound Jones started all 16 regular season games for the New York Jets in 2009, carrying the ball 331 times for 1,402 yards to rank third in the NFL in rushing. His 14 rushing touchdowns with the Jets in 2009 were a franchise single-season record. He earned a Pro Bowl berth with the Jets after rushing for 1,312 yards and 13 TDs in 2008.

The University of Virginia product has appeared in 148 career regular season games with 107 starts in 10 NFL seasons with Arizona (2000-02), Tampa Bay (2003), Chicago (2004-06) and the N.Y. Jets (2007-09). He has recorded 2,280 carries for 9,217 yards with 62 TDs, as well as 289 receptions for 1,858 yards with three scores.

Jones owns 32 career 100-yard rushing games, including seven in 2009. He originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick (seventh overall) of Arizona in the 2000 NFL draft.

Jones finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading rusher in Virginia history with 3,998 yards to go along with 40 total TDs. He recorded a state single-season record 3,319 rushing yards as a junior at Powell Valley High School in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
