  • Independence School District alumni are again joining together to help district children who are homeless.
“I don’t think most of the community is aware of the problem in our area, or I do think more would help. I know that the events that the alumni are sponsoring each month ... make more and more people aware,” said Brenda Cox, a member of the alumni association. “The money raised from these events and others will help make a difference in a child’s life in our town, and it will help ensure that these children can continue to stay here and receive the best education Independence School District can offer.”
The ISD alumni association is sponsoring an all-day fundraiser next month, so the Independence School District Foundation can help homeless students. The Nov. 10 event begins with breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Scrambled eggs, sausage patties and biscuits and gravy will be served. Adults are $5 and children under 10 are $3.
Lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes chili/soup, salad, crackers and dessert. Adults are $7 and children are $5.
The day concludes with dinner, which will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The menu is the same as lunch, but includes entertainment from 6 to 8 p.m. Adults are $10 and children are $8. The entertainment is Jan and Tony, who perform classics from the 1970s, '80s and '90s. The dinner show is limited to 175 because of space restrictions.
All events are at the Masonic Hall, 120 S. Pleasant in Independence.
“The alumni association was formed in hopes that rather than just (William) Chrisman alumni that members from all three high schools would come together and work together for one cause: the children,” said Cox, a Van Horn alumna. “We have been fortunate that many local merchants are helping with donations, and we have several Van Horn students that are also volunteering their time that day to make this event a success. The evening event is going to be a lot of fun. One of our entertainers, Jan Lamb, or “Jammin Jan” as we call her, is also a Van Horn alumna. We hope to have a full house for all three of our meals that day.”
A Homeless Student Donation Collection Day is also scheduled for November. Headed up by the William Chrisman classes of 1957 and 1958, help will also be received from members of the Eastside Baptist Church.
Items needed, include new undergarments of any size, new shoes, pajamas, coats, belts, blue jeans and tops. Unopened toiletries, laundry soap, feminine hygiene products and shaving items will also be accepted. If making a monetary donation, checks are preferred and should be made out to the Independence School District Foundation. All items will be donated to Tabitha’s Closet.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17 in the AutoTek Parking Lot, 537 E. U.S. 24. Drive-through donations will be accepted.
