  • Independence is preparing to celebrate with the longest-running Halloween parade in the Kansas City area.
The 64th annual Halloween Parade, hosted by the Independence Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Centerpoint Medical Center, starts at 3 p.m. Saturday on the Independence Square.
The parade will begin at Pleasant and Walnut streets, moving east on Walnut. The parade will then turn north on Main, west on Lexington and north on Spring, ending at McCoy Park.
Trophies will be given in four categories – commercial, adult, youth and open divisions. Shotgun Jackson, afternoon disc jockey for 106.5 The Wolf, will emcee the parade. Close to 5,000 people attend the parade every year.
Before the parade, children can get a head start on their trick-or-treating. The popular Halloween activity will be available from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Participating merchants will have balloons outside their storefronts.
For more information, contact the Independence Chamber of Commerce at 816-252-4745 or visit the chamber’s website at www.independencechamber.org.
