Vernon L. Merrick, 82, of Independence, Mo., passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2012.

Vernon L. Merrick, 82, of Independence, Mo., passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2012.

Vernon was born August 6, 1930, in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Benjamin Franklin and Anna Marie (Leslie) Merrick. He was a 30 year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1990. Vernon was a member of N.A.L.C. Branch 30. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Vernon was a private business owner. He enjoyed sports, automobiles and country music. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah in 2004, and a granddaughter, Jaime in 2009.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Darlene Merrick of the home; three sons, Daniel Merrick, Dwayne Merrick and wife, Jessica, and Wayne Merrick, all of Independence, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frankie Chippas.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Burial in Historic Salem Cemetery Association with full Military Honors. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
