A Kansas City, Kan., man was arrested and charged with murder in connection to the late Monday night shooting at Hawthorne Place Apartments in Independence.

A Kansas City, Kan., man was arrested and charged with murder in connection to the late Monday night shooting at Hawthorne Place Apartments in Independence.

Ronald T. Taylor, 32, was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and two counts of aggravated assault.

Taylor was arraigned Wednesday morning in Jackson County Circuit Court in Independence. Bond was set at $500,000 cash only.

Taylor is accused of killing Lonzo O. Lamar, 28, of Kansas City, Kan. Lamar had been shot in the back of the head. Another victim, Victor Howard, remains in critical condition.

Tom Gentry, spokesperson for the Independence Police Department, said Tuesday that a group of people went to the Hawthorne Place Apartments at about 11:55 p.m. Monday. The apartments are near Dover Drive and U.S. 24.

The group met up with another group, and there was an altercation. At some point, shots were fired.

It remains unclear why the group had assembled.

Police arrested Taylor in a traffic stop following the shootings. While in jail, Taylor called a woman and told her that he had shot two people. Police had been recording the conversation.
