  • The Blue Springs School District has settled a lawsuit with the family of an elementary student who committed suicide as a result of alleged bullying.
The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri approved the settlement between Kimberly and Randy Myers and the Blue Springs School District and Wally Stine Wednesday.
The suit stemmed from the death of their 12-year-old son Brandon Myers, who committed suicide in February 2007.
In their lawsuit the Myerses alleged that Brandon was the victim of persistent bullying from fellow students at both John Nowlin and Voy Spears elementary schools. This bullying was described as physical, emotional and verbal harassment. In addition, Stine, the father of Brandon’s most vocal tormentor, was singled out because the parents allege that he not only condoned but encouraged his son’s behavior.
The Myerses alleged that the school district did not properly train its employees to recognize or prevent bullying and that teachers and administrators failed to protect him.
The trial was supposed to have started Sept. 17, however a settlement was reached prior to that time. Although the financial terms have been kept confidential, the school district has agreed to create an annual bullying awareness day and have two additional administrators undergo off-site bullying awareness training.
Stine must also write a letter of apology to the Myers as part of the settlement.
