Jordan Hoffman of Lee's Summit has advanced to the championship finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.


Hoffman, 14, who recently completed eighth grade at Pleasant Lea Middle School in Lee's Summit, made it through today's nationally televised semifinals on ESPN2. She will be one of nine finalists to compete in the finals at 7 p.m. CDT, which will be televised by ESPN (Comcast Cable channel 13).


In Round 4, she correctly spelled "toxophilite." In Round 5, she spelled "trophobiosis." She was only one of nine to survive Round 6, correctly spelling "heiau."


Vanya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kan., was eliminated in Round 6, missing on the word "pejerrey."
