Merle Bonne Wildey Ferris, world traveler, editor, TESL professor and community activist, beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on January 20, 2009 at the age of 93.

Merle was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ and was ordained an Elder in August 1992.

Merle was born on April 24, 1915 to Cora Brackenbury and Robert Wilde. Her sisters are Carol Kellogg (deceased) and Lois Van Fleet of Independence, MO. She is survived by her half-brother Robert Wilde and half-sister Patricia Wilde of California. Merle is also survived by her four daughters, Sara Jo Decker, Tary Tobin, Karen Ferris and Deborah Ferris, by her 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Her granddaughter Michele Magner was her primary caretaker for many years.

A memorial service will be held at Arlington Cemetery where her husband, Deam Ferris, is buried. Merle was a lifelong believer in science and education; therefore she donated her body to KU Medical center for research. In lieu of flowers she requested donations be made to the Deam and Merle Ferris Endowed Scholarship Fund at Graceland University or Alzheimer’s Research at University of Kansas Medical Center.
