Four Independence City Council district meetings will take place in July related to the joint stormwater control and local parks sales tax election that will take place on Aug. 3. All meetings will start at 6:30 p.m.

 July 1, District 2, George Owens Nature Park Lodge, 1601 S. Speck Road;

 July 13, District 1, National Frontier Trails Museum, 318 W. Pacific Ave.;

 July 20, District 4, Noland Road Baptist Church, west wing, 4505 S. Noland Road;

 July 27, District 3, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, sanctuary, 4000 S. Lee’s Summit Road.

The August ballot will include a single question asking residents to consider the renewal of the city’s one-eighth cent parks sales tax and the one-fourth cent stormwater sales tax that are now in effect. The existing stormwater tax is set to expire at the end of 2010, while the parks sales tax is set to expire at the end of 2012.

While no sales tax increase would take place if the ballot question passes, the proposed initiative excludes a sunset clause. If renewed, the two taxes would ultimately continue on Jan. 1, 2011.
