Firefighters are calling a fire that destroyed a home in Grain Valley Tuesday morning suspicious.

Ed Saffell, assistant fire chief for the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District, said Thursday the abandoned home in the 1000 block of R.D. Mize Road, which is owned by the city of Grain Valley, had electricity on the property but not inside the home.

“We looked it over pretty good,” Saffell said. “We have yet to search the root cellar.”

Reports that there was a body inside were untrue, Saffell said. He said no one was injured in the fire and that firefighters were fortunate that the fire happened when it did.

“It was cool when they fought it,” Saffell said.
