Every Thursday in September, all animals that have been at the shelter for 30 or more days may be adopted for $30.

From Sept. 2 through 10, the “Labrador Day Weekend Special” includes an adoption fee of $50 for Labradors or Labrador mixes, in celebration of Labor Day.

The following week, Sept. 11 through 16, is “Public Service Appreciation Week.” Any city, county, state, federal or military personnel who show the appropriate identification will receive 50 percent off of the adoption fee. A $14 adoption special will be in effect on Sept. 14.

The “Fantasy Football Week Special” runs Sept. 17 through 24. Any animal identified with a football tag on its cage is available for adoption for 50 percent off of the adoption fee.

The Independence Animal Shelter is one of 50 U.S. shelters who qualified to participate in the 2011 American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals $100K Challenge. From August through October, and using baseline data from 2010, animal shelters and their communities are aiming to get more animals adopted or returned to their owners.
