Independence police said Monday they are talking with two “persons of interest” in a shooting at a convenience store late Sunday.

A customer walked into the Conoco service station at 11100 E. U.S. 40 around 11:30 p.m. as it was being robbed. The suspect shot the customer, according to police.

The customer, whose name wasn’t released, had surgery Monday and was in stable condition, Sgt. John Bullard said.

There are two suspects in the case. The first person walked into the store and then left. The second suspect entered a short time later.

He was armed with a shotgun and demanded money from the store clerk.

As the clerk retrieved the money, the customer walked into the store and was shot. The interval from the shooter to the victim was an intermediate distance, Bullard said.

Bullard acknowledged the customer was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The suspect fled with an unknown amount of cash.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Independence Police Detective unit at 816-325-7330.
