To the editor:

I hope that you realize I am growing older and my memory is not what it once was. I hope one of your readers can help me out.

Since the election I have had an old melody running through my head, but I cannot recall the words. Years ago everyone was singing it; seems I heard it everywhere I went. Now all I can remember is the title, “Happy Days Are Here Again.”

Today we have Obama to look forward to, and I feel like singing.

I do not know why this did not come to mind two years ago. At that time, we had Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Hillary and Bill and perhaps Howard Dean was still around.

Surely if I walked down Main Street today, someone will be singing my song.

Editor’ s note – The song is “Happy Days,” introduced to the world in the 1930 movie “Chasing Rainbows” (starring, among others, Jack Benny). The country had entered the Great Depression, and when he ran for president in 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt adopted it as his theme song. It’s been heard at Democratic Party conventions now and then ever since.

“Happy Days”
Music and lyrics by J. Yellen and M. Ager

So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last

Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let’s sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
There’s no one
Who can doubt it now
So let’s tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There’ ll be no more from now on
From now on ...

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let’s sing a song of cheer again

Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!
