Lee’s Summit North High School graduate McCall Christopher, last fall’s Class 2 high school individual state champion, tied for third place in the event sponsored by the Kansas City Golf Association.

Several area golfers had strong showings in the Women’s Amateur of Kansas City over the weekend.

Lee’s Summit North High School graduate McCall Christopher, last fall’s Class 2 high school individual state champion, tied for third place in the event sponsored by the Kansas City Golf Association.

Christopher fired a two-day total of 9-over-par 153 on par-72 Swope Memorial Golf Course to tie Kansas City’s Jennifer Clark just four strokes behind champion Mary Kate Bird of Kansas City. Christopher shot a 75 Sunday to go with Saturday’s 78.

Varapan “Plern” Promboobpa of Blue Springs, a former all-state player at Blue Springs South High School, shot 80 in the final round and finished at 161, tied for 11th place.

Former Lee’s Summit West golfer Madison Maddox finished one stroke ahead of Promboobpa, posting a total of 160 (75-85). Her sister, Morgan Maddox, who will be a senior at Lee’s Summit West in the fall, finished at 178 (88-90).

Lauren Fender, who also will be a senior at West this fall, totaled 181 (93-88).

MISSOURI AMATEUR: Two local golfers earned one of the 64 berths in match play at the Missouri Amateur Championship but both failed to get past the first round of match play.

Brad Rentfrow of Blue Springs shot a two-round total of 147 in stroke play to earn the No. 58 seed but he fell 6 and 5 to Ryan Marks of Warrensburg in the opening round last Thursday at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield.

Steve Groom of Raytown was the No. 54 seed after also shooting 147 in stroke play. Groom, though, fell 2 and 1 to Zach Vandolah of Kansas City in the first round.

Brad Nurski of St. Joseph, the No. 2 seed after stroke play, went on to claim the title, defeating Matt Miller of Eldon 2-up in Sunday’s 36-hole final.

Next up is the Missouri Golf Association 2010 Stroke Play Championship July 21-23 at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis.
