Blue Springs South had to settle for second place in the Gold Bracket of the Greater Kansas City Suburban Softball Invitational Tournament at Adair Park.

The Jaguars defeated Grain Valley 8-1 in the semifinals Friday and then fell to Suburban Big Six rival Liberty 4-1 in the championship bracket finals.

Megan Schwindler scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked in pitching the Grain Valley victory. Lauren Chirnside led an 11-hit attack with a single and triple and four RBIs. She also scored one run and stole a base.

Kaitlin Schaberg added two singles and Michaela Tolliver a double to the attack.
Three two-run innings featured the South attack.

Chelsea Ross allowed only three hits and homered in leading Liberty past the Jaguars (4-1).

“Overall, we had great hitting and great defense and the pitchers did a good job of keeping the ball down and not walking many,” coach Vickie Brummel said of the South tournament performance. “It’s a good start.”

Grain Valley fell to Lee’s Summit North 7-3 in the third-place game.
