Winifred Kay Schlagle, 59, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011, at her home.

Winifred Kay Schlagle, 59, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011, at her home. 

A Memorial Service will be held at 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 26th, at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley.  Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. preceding the service. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3846 W. 75th, Overland Park, KS  66208.

Kay was born January 12, 1952, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of William & Ruth (Deterding) Zumwalt.  She graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1970, then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science Degree at Park University.  She married Donald E. Schlagle Jr. on November 18, 1977. 

Kay was employed as an Equal Opportunity Specialist with the U.S. Department of Education for 17 years.  Her memberships include St. John La Lande Catholic Church in Blue Springs and the American Federation of Government Employees. Kay enthusiastically attended all the activities of her children and grandchildren.  She was an animal lover, and was especially fond of Labrador Retrievers.

Her survivors include her husband of 34 years: Don Schlagle of the home; two daughters: Kelli Schlagle and Jamie Gilpin & husband Tyler, all of Independence; one son: Tim Schlagle of the home; her mother: Ruth Zumwalt of Independence; and six grandchildren: Chris, Devan, Alexis, Logan, Gabriel, and Kaleb.
