• Animals Best Friends: Ester is an adult Lab with a puppy's heart

  • Every time I look into the eyes of our Lab, Sweet Pea, I melt. She has my heart, that is certain. I admit that I’ve spoiled her, but she is my 75-pound puppy and my baby.
My first experience with Labs was in 2006 when ABF took in a pregnant Lab from the Independence Animal Shelter. She had nine puppies and we worked hard caring for her and those little babies and loved every minute of it. I hate to have favorites, but unfortunately I do and Labs are one of them. When I went down one night to take photos and spend some time with the ABF dogs I nearly fell over when I laid eyes on Ester. She reminded me so much of Petunia, one of the nine Lab pups that I loved so much, that I was tempted to take Ester home with me. Unfortunately, I can’t take her. We have a full house and I have one Lab that would be very jealous if I brought Ester home.
So I am writing about Ester and hoping with all my heart that someone wonderful will give her a chance and give her a good, loving home. Ester is five years young. She was left at the shelter because she “barked,” which makes no sense unless she was left alone outside most of the time. Ester is in good health and is starved for affection. She loves everyone she sees and is eager to please. She knows sit and can be taught many other commands with patience and love.
Labs are active dogs who love to run and play, go for walks, and chase squirrels and rabbits. They also have such sweet dispositions that they make great family dogs. Our Lab loves to be in the yard with me when I’m working in the flower beds, but she is also next to me on the couch at night to watch TV.
I can’t stress enough how much older and adult dogs make great pets. An adult dog is less likely to tear up things in the house unless they are left alone too long. Years ago my cock-a-poo would turn over the trash cans in the house if I was late coming home from work. Crates and baby gates can solve most problems until the dog learns the household rules and boundaries. Just because one doesn’t take them in as a baby doesn’t mean that they can’t be trained. Perseverance and love works wonders with dogs.
If you have room in your home and your heart for this special girl and think she would be a good fit in your family, please go to our website at www.animalsbestfriends.org and complete an application for Ester. ABF does home visits and two-week trials to be sure the family and animal are a good match.
