To the editor:
I have observed the arguments regarding prayer at city council meetings in Independence and offer the following as a compromise prayer:
We thank you for the Messiah, the Persian king Cyrus the Great. (Isaiah 45:1)
We thank you for the Samaritan, Jesus Christ. (John 8:48-49)
In anticipation of the end times, we ask that when our time comes, we be delivered not to the first, nor the second, but to the third heaven. (2nd Corinthians 12:2)
Finally, we promise from this day forward not to engage in public prayer. (Matthew 6:5-8)
We say all this because we know your book (the Bible) to be inerrant.
