On a day the Clay County prosecutor announced the disappearance of a Kansas City woman married to an Independence firefighter is now a death investigation, the woman’s family announced a substantial award for information in the case.

Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said Thursday the case of Renee Pernice, missing since early January, is now a death investigation.

“Based on the weight of existing evidence, the absence of Renee trying to contact family members and the amount of time that has passed since she disappeared, I consider Renee Pernice’s case as a death investigation,” White said in a statement released Thursday. “We believe foul play is involved.”

From the start, the family of Renee Pernice has said they believe foul play is involved in Pernice’s disappearance. Pernice, the wife of Independence Firefighter Shon Pernice, is described by family members as a person who would never go days without contacting family members.

“She was a devoted family woman, a dedicated career woman and had numerous family members and friends with whom she was in frequent contact,” White said.

Renee Pernice’s cell phone was found near Sixth Street and Gladstone Boulevard in northeast Kansas City shortly after she was reported missing Jan. 3 by her father, Rick Pretz.

“There has been no contact for over a month. That indicates she cannot make calls or communicate with family and friends,” White said.

On Thursday Pretz and other family members held a news conference in Olathe to announce a $25,000 reward for information into Renee Pernice’s whereabouts. Kansas City police have yet to name a suspect or a person of interest in the case.

Shon Pernice has not talked publicly about his wife’s disappearance, instead referring all media and police inquiries to his lawyers Kevin Baldwin and Eric Vernon.

After taking vacation time to address the disappearance of his wife, Shon Pernice, also a member of the Missouri Army National Guard, is now back at work in Independence, according to Fire Chief Sandra K. Schiess.

Anyone who has any information about Renee Pernice’s case is urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
