A sting operation late last week netted 27 arrests near 35th Street and Noland Road.
A weekend prostitution sting operation by Independence police resulted in the arrest of 27 people.
Police detectives arrested 13 men trying to pay for sex and 14 females trying to offer up sex for money.
The operation happened Thursday to Saturday at an undisclosed structure near the area of 35th and Noland Road to 40th and Noland Road.
Police have done similar stings before but never have arrested this many people. “It’s a huge number,” said Capt. Ken Bergman.
Detectives with the department’s special victim unit coordinated the sting.
Police decided to do the operation by scanningWeb sites that advertise alleged prostitution.
“We kind of watch the ads and when they start piling up and start to mention Independence a little bit then we say ‘it’s time for another sting,’” Bergman said.
Detectives scan the Web site Craigslist.org., a site that’s been in the media spotlight because it allows people the opportunity to list erotic or adult services, some of which may be covers for prostitution.
Also, the department got a call from Wichita and St. Joseph police departments that said Independence was currently the place for “call girl type prostitution,” Bergman said.
