Target, Gap, Sally Beauty, GameStop, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Mattress Firm are open at the Adams Dairy Landing in Blue Springs.

In case you haven’t noticed.

The opening of stores at the retail complex started in October when Target opened its doors, ushering in a new era for Blue Springs residents.

Designed with an Italian/Mediterranean style architecture theme, the 65-acre, 600,000-square-foot development has been years in the planning stages.

Other stores, including Petco, Kohl's, Books-A-Million, Lowe’s, Arby’s, and Olive Garden are in the planning stages, but are not yet open. In addition to retail shopping, the center will also have large areas for public gatherings.

The development also will include a “pedestrian friendly walkable design” that will allow for community events and activities, according to the city.

The project has gone through some funding difficulties, and the city has agreed twice to issue and back bonds in order to complete infrastructure and other features.

The center is located along I-70 at Adams Dairy Parkway, adjacent to Wal-Mart and Home Depot.

City officials have for years said the city needs a center like this in order to prevent “retail leakage” to Independence, which has a mall and several plazas.

TIMELINE

The project was first announced as early as 2004 as Coronado Plaza, but the original developer backed out. In 2006, RED Development announced that it would take over the project

Groundbreaking for the project was in the winter of 2007.

First store opened: Target, October 2009

The Blue Springs City Council voted in the summer of 2009 to issue and back $14.5 million in bonds to help the project; within the next 60 days, City Council again will vote whether to issue and back an additional $16.9 million in bonds.
