Miesha Pickens is a first-year student at MCC-Blue River, taking some basic general education courses before transferring to the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg in two years. A 2009 graduate of Blue Springs South High School, she wants to become a nurse and has taken time to come up with the top 5 things Blue River has to offer to students.


5 Programs. With a variety of campus life and leadership organizations such as Drama Club, Re-Entry Club, Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Activities Council as well as sports that include soccer, Blue River has a number of opportunities to get involved in what is happening on campus.


4 The cafeteria and commons.
“I love the cafeteria, Almost everyone is there in the mornings and between classes,” Pickens said. “It is a great place just to hang out and even get some studying done.”


3 Tutoring. MCC-Blue River provides tutoring in almost every subject including English, mathematics, science and economics. Pickens said the help in tutoring is a great advantage to attending a smaller campus such as Blue River.


2 Resources, resources, resources. Support is available for all students there the Academic Resource Center and the Development Center. In addition, the Education Opportunity Center offers career counseling, assistance in selecting a four-year college as well as help with applying to college and information about financial aid.

“There is just so much information available to you, it is amazing,” Pickens said. “Whatever direction you want to go in, they will help you. The staff there know what is best for each and every person.”


1 People. Pickens said the best thin g she likes about MCC-Blue River is the faculty and staff. She said not matter what kind of question she has, there is always someone there to listen and to help her move in the right direction.

“I just cannot say enough good things about the people,” she said. “They are so very helpful. I could not ask for more.”
