To the editor:
On Nov. 14, my sister Sharon and I attended the Connie Smith Show at the newly refurbished (and formerly known as The Sundowners), Onyx Theatre just off of Interstate 70 in Oak Grove.
Tickets to see and hear the 43-year member of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, Connie Smith, were an extremely affordable $15 each. She is a delightful, exciting, legendary country music performer who continues to stand by her country music roots by creating and performing the old fashioned way: live, in person, in front of an audience and with a live band.
Kudos to the new management of the Onyx Theatre for bringing Smith to our area and for being so hospitable. 6 pm concert goers were cordially invited to attend the 8:30 pm show at no charge! This was a particular treat because Connie Smith performed an entirely different song-set during the second show. As the dreams of the management of the Onyx to become a regional performing arts center become reality, it will be vitally important for Eastern Jackson County and western Lafayette County to support and attend shows at the Onyx.
I wouldn’t have known about the Connie Smith show without having read about it in The Examiner. So thank you Examiner for keeping us informed. You can find out information about upcoming shows and directions to the Onyx Theatre by calling 816-224-8259.
My sister and I like going to Branson and seeing the shows there. We also like going to the Missouri State Fair to see the country music performers there. How wonderful it is to have a venue like the Onyx Theatre in our back yard. Might we suggest the Onyx consider bringing in country music legends Leroy Van Dyke and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers?
