  • The Lee’s Summit Hawthorn Bank Outlaws are closing in on the Zone 2 West American Legion title.
    The Outlaws swept Independence VFW Post 1000 Bears 12-1 and 7-3 at the Independence Athletic Complex Monday night to improve to 27-3 overall and 17-1 in Zone 2 play with eight games remaining. The Bears dropped to 1-17 and 0-14. 0-14.
    Jackson Markham allowed only four hits and struck out five in pitching the Outlaws to the opening-game victory. Andrew Wayman took the loss. Blake Bruning went 4-for-4, Quentin Bradford had three hits and P.J. Seufert and Dalton Woods added two each to lead the Outlaws’ 16-hit attack. Tanner Webb had two hits to pace the Bears.
    A five-run sixth inning rallied the Outlaws to the second-game victory. Woods was the winning pitcher and Tyler Bover took the loss.
    Seth Soto’s bases-loaded triple gave the Outlaws the lead for good. Seufert and Gaeton Gronberg each added two hits.
    ST. JOSEPH POST 11 10-2, INDEPENDENCE POST 21 0-12: Cody Gregory’s single, double, triple and two RBIs helped Post 21 gain a split of Monday night’s Zone 2 West doubleheader.
    Quinton Brown, Cory Pleacher and Chase LaFavor chipped in with two hits each in the 12-2 win. Post 21 (8-16, 8-10) scored five runs in each of the first and third innings.
    Nathan Neal allowed only four hits and struck out seven in pitching St. Joseph (5-12, 4-8) to the 10-0 victory in the first game. Justin Madsen took the loss.
