  • Katie (Cooper) McClaran, 84, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, with her family by her side.
Katie was born July 4, 1928, in Jackson Parish, La., to Joseph Milton and Mattie (Tullos) Cooper. She graduated as valedictorian of Okaloosa High School class of 1945. She attended Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge and graduated from Louisiana Tech University at Ruston in January 1949. After graduation, Katie moved to Independence, Mo., where she worked at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital as a lab technician. She eventually became secretary to the City Clerk of Independence, where she met her future husband, Ray McClaran. She and Ray were married November 27, 1954, at the Stone Church in Independence. While raising her family, Katie was an assistant science instructor at the Independence Sanitarium School of Nursing. She later was a substitute teacher in the Independence School District. She then worked in the HIV/AIDS research lab at the Community Blood Center in Kansas City until her retirement. She volunteered for church, Meals on Wheels, and many other activities. She also worked part-time at Hallmark Cards and as an election judge. Through all of her life, Katie was known for her warm, caregiving personality, and she never met a stranger. She went out of her way to help others, and was the ultimate hostess.
Katie is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Ray McClaran; and her three children, Brenda Allen, Sheryl McClaran and Dale McClaran and wife, Valerie, all of Independence. She also leaves four grandchildren, Brad and Brent Allen, and Lindsey and Collin McClaran.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Stone Church, Independence. Visitation will be held at the church, starting at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stone Church Endowment Fund. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.kccremation.com.
