To the editor:
We as a community have been violated. Something of ours has been destroyed. How will we respond? I would like us to consider a restorative justice process.
Restorative justice recognizes that, yes, laws have been broken, but perhaps more importantly, relationships have been broken as a result of offenders’ behavior. The hope is that healing can occur for victims, offenders and the community. As the stakeholders come together in a facilitated conversation, participants are given the opportunity to recognize the human consequences of their behavior, and plans are cooperatively agreed to that will make things right to the extent possible.
I hope that, on our behalf, city officials will contact the Community Mediation Center here in Independence to initiate the restorative justice process to address the theft and destruction of the Pioneer Woman statue.
