    Have we damaged our climate?
Read what Damian Carrington recently wrote for The Guardian newspaper: “For the first time in human history, the concentration of climate-warming carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has passed the milestone level of 400 parts per million. The last time so much greenhouse gas was in the air was several million years ago, when the Arctic was ice-free, savannah spread across the Sahara desert and sea level was up to 40 meters (132 feet) higher than today.”
The latest poll by the Associated Press found that 78 percent of American citizens believe that the world’s temperatures been rising over the last 100 years, and the poll includes 70 percent of Republicans.
Loaded with these facts President Obama, as he did in 2009, pledged that the United States would lead the way in cutting greenhouse gas emission by 17 percent of 2005 levels by 2020. “We must use less dirty energy, waste less and concentrate more on cleaner sources and to reach a new global agreement on saving the planet.” he said.
Leading the deniers parade, behind Rush Limbaugh, is Fox News. The Union of Concerned Scientists noted that Fox News has misled its audience in 93 percent of its environmental coverage while nearly 97 percent of climate scientists across the globe concur that the planet is warming and fossil fuels are the main culprits.
Columnist Charles Krauthammer writes that we don’t control the other 96 percent of mankind and that President Obama’s plan is a war on coal and would kill tens of thousands of jobs. He states, “China and India together are opening one new coal plant every week.”
Yet, only last week, the United States and China agreed on a new five-point initiative against climate change aimed at decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
Krauthammer’s concerns about India and other polluting nations are valid. Its intentions will be known when the United Nations meets in Paris in 2015 to finalize a binding international treaty to curb emissions.
Obama said of climate change deniers that, “We don’t have time for a meeting of the Flat Earth Society.”
Deniers should heed Thomas H. Huxley’s prayer, “God give me strength to face a fact though it slay me.”
I give you President John Adams’ toast: Independence forever.
