  • Independence police caught a suspected burglar hiding in a vacant rental home after a short standoff Wednesday afternoon.
Police found a 46-year-old man hiding in a vacant house in the 3800 block of South Phelps Road after he fled there. Police spokesperson Tom Gentry said the suspect was trying to conceal himself by lying face down between two boards in the attic until a K-9 unit dog was sent in the house after him.
“They went in there and pulled him out,” Gentry said. “There was no armed confrontation.”
According to a report by Examiner news partner KMBC, the homeless man had been squatting in the vacant rental property as he stripped the home of its copper and electrical wiring. The property owner, Tom Fluty, told KMBC that the man had done several thousand dollars worth of damage to the home, which Fluty had been using for storage.
Fluty told KMBC a neighbor noticed something unusual and called 911. The man had also been hiding in a grove of trees nearby, and police discovered a trash can there containing a chair, a cooking pot, games and items from a local pawn shop.
Gentry said no one was injured in the incident.
The man was taken from the house on a stretcher. Gentry said he had not been charged yet as of Wednesday evening.
