  • The project: The Blue Springs School District is reconfiguring the front entrances at nine buildings to improve safety and security.
    Completion date: August 2013
Location: Blue Springs Freshman Center; Delta Woods, Moreland Ridge, Brittany Hill and Sunny Vale middle schools and Franklin Smith, James Lewis, Sunny Pointe, Voy Spears and William Yates elementary schools.
The details: Voters approved a $20 million bond issue in April to fund a variety of projects, including new front entrances at the four middle schools and four elementary schools as well as the Freshman Center. About $14 million of the bond issue is going toward safety and security, while the remaining $6 million will fund other renovation and construction projects throughout the district. The new entrances will enhance security by forcing visitors through the front office before gaining access to the rest of the building. Other safety enhancements include about $1 million in bullet proof glass and an expansion of the district’s panic button system. Telephones will also be installed in every classroom. But instead of using the telephone lines, the phone system will run through fiber optic Internet cables.
The progress: Bill Cowling, director of buildings and grounds, said construction is going well at all sites. He said there were delays toward the beginning of the project because of the wet conditions in April and May. However, since then, the ground has dried out, allowing construction crews to catch up. A variety of work is now going on in the buildings, including landscaping, painting and flooring. In addition, some of the classroom renovations have already been completed, allowing furniture and supplies to be moved in.
“With two weeks to go, it looks very promising that will be finished,” Cowling said. “We are really moving in one end (of the buildings), while we are moving out the other. Everything is very well orchestrated at this point.”
