  • Attendance boundaries are changing slightly next year for a Grain Valley elementary school, affecting students at two buildings.
The Grain Valley Board of Education voted Tuesday to enlarge the Matthews Elementary attendance boundaries. The neighborhood impacted by this change, which currently is in the Prairie Branch attendance area, is between the 100 and 600 blocks of Woodbury Drive. The connecting streets are Phelps Drive, Woodbury Court and Woodbury Place.
The neighborhood is close to Matthews and contains about 80 students. Letters have already been sent to the affected families.
Superintendent Roy Moss said the change is needed because overall student enrollment continues to increase. However, the Matthews Elementary population has decreased in the last few years. There are currently 373 students attending Matthews, although there is capacity for 500. Some full-size classrooms are not being used because the enrollment has not called for it.
At nearby Prairie Branch, however, there are 563 students, which is well over capacity.
The faculty at both buildings will work together to provide for a smooth transition for those children affected.
Parents with questions should contact the Central office at 816-847-5006 or the principals at either elementary school. For Prairie Branch, contact James Pinney and for Matthews Elementary, contact Nick Gooch.
