  • Olyvia Behnke felt good about the amount of preparation and hard work that the Blue Springs South High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad put into the 2010 Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association’s Kansas City Regional competition.
“I feel so good about our preparation and performance. The adrenaline is really pumping,” said the Blue Springs South senior. “I definitely felt confident going in. We have practiced really hard, and I hope that shows.”
Blue Springs South placed fifth out of seven teams in the Class 5 Large Division on the first day of the MCCA regional competition Thursday at Lee’s Summit North High School. This means the team has qualified for the 2010 MCCA state competition Nov. 18 at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
To qualify for state, teams must either place in the top five at regionals or receive an at-large bid.
Other area teams to qualify for state include Lee’s Summit North, first in Class 5 Large; Lee’s Summit High School, second in Class 5 Large and Lee’s Summit West, fourth in Class 5 Large.
The competition continues Friday at Lee’s Summit North. Admission is $5 per person for one session or $8 per person for two sessions.
“I think the squad has worked so hard within the time frame we have had this summer,” said Meghan Ryan, assistant coach for Blue Springs South. “Regionals was moved up two weeks, which made practices that much more intense. This team has been really committed. They have put their heart and soul into this.”
Bre Hemmel, a senior at Lee’s Summit North and co-captain of this year’s squad, felt good about the first place win.
She said this is the best she has felt about a competition in her four years at Lee’s Summit North and believes the talent on this year’s squad is among the best ever.
“It is a challenge to stay dedicated in the summer, but it is something we are all willing to do,” she said. “This is something I have been doing since the first grade. I love it. I am so happy we did our absolute best.”
Blue Springs South senior Jennifer Powell said she felt like the squad was as prepared as it could be going into the competition.
She said the biggest challenge continues to be sticking stunts and making sure each member’s placement on the mats is correct.
“I believe the team as a whole is much more confident this year because we have really bonded as a team,” she said. “We are all friends, and we all get along. We want the best for everyone, and we are not competing with each other. I think that has made us a lot stronger because we are performing as a team and not individuals.”
