Examiner High School Girls Athlete of the Week for Feb. 25: Eleanor Prewitt-Thomas
EXAMINER GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
SCHOOL: Blue Springs
HIGHLIGHTS: The senior set the state record in the 500-yard freestyle twice in as many days while leading the Wildcats to their second straight state title and their fourth in the last five years. Prewitt-Thomas matched the record of 4 minutes, 56.61 seconds set by Mehlville’s Brigette Selbert one heat earlier in Friday’s preliminaries. She then beat Selbert and took sole possession of the record in Saturday’s finals with a All-American qualifying time of 4:55.65. She also took third place in the 200 individual medley and helped the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams capture second and third place, respectively.
COMMENT: “The things she did, not just her performances, but being willing to work that hard and do it with a smile, really made a difference,” Wildcats coach Bill Shalley said. “She had a great sense of humor this year, and kept it through the hardest training. She’s a real worker. She’s a great kid. We’re going to miss her.”
