  • An man has been charged with shooting his mother to death inside her east home near the Kansas City-Independence border in the area of U.S. 40 and Blue Ridge Boulevard.
Richard A. Ohearn, 58, is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Nancy Ohearn, 78. Court documents list the same address for both in the 12100 block of East 46th St.
According to court documents, Kansas City police received a 911 call  at about 10:15 p.m. Friday from a man who said his mother had been shot and was dead. When officers arrived, Richard Ohearn answered the door, and they found the victim lying dead on the floor.
A handgun and a box of ammunition ws on a piano in the living room. The victim had a gunshot wound in the back and a head injury, the Jackson County medical examiner found.
Richard Ohearn was reported to have said, "I killed my mother, didn't I?" as he was being removed from the back of a patrol wagon, according to the court documents.
Another family member told police that Nancy Ohearn had spent the day with him, and that he had dropped her off at her home about 9:30 p.m. At that time, he saw Richard Ohearn, who appeared to have been drinking and who was upset because another relative was in town.
