Michael Pierro Jr., Justin Nguyen, Kristin Gutridge, Preston Hickert and Eugene Wallace have been selected as Students of the Month by the Rotary Club of Independence.

Michael Pierro Jr., Justin Nguyen, Kristin Gutridge, Preston Hickert and Eugene Wallace have been selected as Students of the Month by the Rotary Club of Independence.


Pierro is a May graduate of Van Horn High School and was named to the 2011-12 honor roll; was named football first team all-conference; was named Examiner All-Area honorable mention and was named offense captain of 2011-12 for the Van Horn football team.


In addition, he is a member of the football, basketball and track teams.


Pierro plans to attend MCC-Blue River and study physical education. He would then like to transfer to a university to earn a degree. His parents are Renita and Michael Pierro.


Nguyen is a May graduate of William Chrisman and is the recipient of a McCoy Award and is a member of the National Honor Society.


In addition, he has been a member of the football and baseball teams and is a member of the Vietnamese Eucharist Youth Society.


Nguyen plans to attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City and then Kansas State University to earn  degree in architecture. His parents are Nhung Nguyen and Phillip Vu.


Gutridge is a May graduate of Van Horn and is a member of the National Honor Society; has been named to the principal’s honor roll and is a former Kauffman Scholar.


In addition, she is involved in debate and photojournalism.


Gutridge plans to attend Johnson County Community College for culinary arts and then go onto Le Cordon Bleu. Her parents are Becky and Scott Gutridge.


Hickert is a May graduate of Truman High School and is a McCoy Award recipient; is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society and is an academic letter recipient.


In addition, he is a member of the student council and the Spanish Club and is a member of the speech and debate team.


In the future, Hickert plans to attend the University of Kansas. His parents are John and Thelma Hickert.


Wallace is a May graduate of Van Horn and has been named to the honor roll and has received an award from the Sons of the American Revolution.


In addition, he is a member of the football, wrestling, track and golf teams; is a member of the Junior ROTC and enjoys writing poetry in his free time.


Wallace plans to serve in the United States Army. He will leave for basic training in August. His parents are Eugene Wallace and Versey Miller.
